Originally from Novato, California, Karen graduated from Yale University in 2003 with a B.S. in astronomy and physics. She continued to study astronomy in graduate school at UCLA, focusing on the X-ray properties of active galactic nuclei. In the end, however, a burning desire to “help people here on Earth” drew Karen away from research and toward the world of non-profits. After a brief stint as a high school chemistry teacher, Karen was excited to join the team at QuestBridge. Having grown up in a family full of educators, Karen learned early on to place a high value on education, and now she enjoys helping students to achieve their academic goals through QuestBridge’s programs.

Jacob was born in Bangor, ME, but lived in various places along the East Coast, eventually finishing up high school in Decatur, GA. For college, he moved across the country to Southern California where he majored in Cognitive Science at Pomona College. During his spring semester junior year, he studied in 10 different countries around the world with the Semester at Sea program. This wonderful experience piqued his interest in international development. After graduating, he traveled to Mongolia to serve in the Peace Corps, where he taught English in a small town in the Gobi desert and worked with aid organizations helping to spread awareness of human trafficking and domestic violence issues. Upon returning from Mongolia, Jacob began working with QuestBridge. He learned about the organization during his senior year at Pomona, serving as a member of the Admissions and Financial Aid committee. This experience provided useful insight into the admissions process and helped him realize his passion for education, namely improving accessibility and effectiveness of higher education systems.
