What QB Scholars say about housing...

“Residential life is one of the most unique parts of Rice culture. Each student is randomly assigned to one of our 9 residential colleges . . . Each college comes equipped with its own dorms, dining halls, and public rooms. Students remain a part of their college for their entire Rice career and can become involved with its student government, intramural sports, or student plays.”
- Anonymous, Psychology and Visual Arts double major, Class of 2009

Housing
  • The residential college system lies at the core of the Rice undergraduate experience. All new students are assigned to one of nine residential units, or colleges, and each college houses approximately 250 students. Your college is your "home base" during your time at Rice. The colleges serve not only as residence halls, but each college functions as a self-supporting community, boasting its own student government, budget, sports teams, and dining facilities. Colleges also have recreational lounges, libraries, computer labs, laundry rooms and outdoor courtyards for sports and entertainment. Assignments to colleges are random, and as a result, the colleges are very diverse and egalitarian institutions.

  • Housing is guaranteed for first-year students.

  • 68% of undergraduates live on campus.

Student Life
  • In addition to the residential college system, Rice also supports over 200 student clubs and organizations. Student groups range from community service organizations to performing arts, political interest groups, religious organizations, and hobby-oriented clubs.

  • Every undergraduate at Rice is given a Passport to Houston which provides free, unlimited use of the METRORail and bus system, free access to the Museum of Fine Arts, the Houston Zoo, and many other entertainment and cultural venues in Houston. Rice’s campus is located just a mile from downtown Houston and the Theater District, and the campus is literally across the street from the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, and the Rice Village shopping center, home to over 400 shops and restaurants.

What QB Scholars say about meeting new people...

"The Rice University residential college system makes it EXTREMELY easy to create a strong group of friends. The perfect environment for incoming students."
    - Anthony Moore, Biology major, Class of 2009

"Rice does an entire week of orientation for new incoming students and it is very difficult, through the zany games and activities, not to meet others. You would be surprised how many students have the same likes and dislikes as you. My roommate could solve the Rubik’s cube faster than I could and also spoke Japanese! More people than I could count I have played tennis with and most everyone loves watching a good horror movie now and then."
Daniel Young, Astrophysics Major, Class of 2009
