Wellesley Traditions

Flower Sunday has come to include the tradition of Wellesley 'little' and 'big' sisters. First-year students are paired with an upperclasswoman who will act as her 'big' sister. As tradition goes, big sisters bring bouquets of flowers to their little sisters and accompany them to the Flower Sunday festivities.

Hooprolling: In late May, seniors line up on Tupelo Lane and vie for the honor of winning the race and being thrown into Lake Waban.

Marathon Monday: Wellesley students celebrate the running of the Boston Marathon on Patriot’s Day every year. The day begins with a barbecue on Munger Meadow, and after eating together on the lawn, students walk up to take part in the annual "Scream Tunnel" along Central Street. For hours, students cheer, hold signs, give high-fives and even receive kisses from passing runners. The runners’ appreciation and excitement as they pass the college exemplifies the fame and recognition of the Wellesley College Scream Tunnel. In an article focused on the Scream Tunnel, The Boston Globe reported, "It’s all part of a tradition as old as the Boston Marathon itself."
