Frequently Asked Questions - Yale FAQ

Yale University
QuestBridge Frequently Asked Questions 2007-2008

How does applying to Yale through QuestBridge differ from applying to other QuestBridge Partners?
If you become a QuestBridge finalist and rank Yale in the College Match process, you will still have to submit the Common Application and Yale Supplement through www.commonapp.org. You do not have to resend your teacher evaluations, but you must have your guidance counselor send your School Report along with your official high school transcript. (Note: in filling out the Common Application, you may reuse your essays and other information from your QuestBridge application by copying and pasting the relevant text onto our application forms.)

It is absolutely necessary for all Yale applicants to submit the appropriate application and financial aid documents, so please be sure to submit the Common Application and Yale Supplement along with your financial aid information (a printed CSS Profile and parent's 2006 tax return) by November 2. QuestBridge will announce the results of the College Match process on November 30, and students who match with Yale can expect to hear from the Admissions Office in the following weeks.

Is the Yale match binding?
A Yale match is non-binding, which means that students may apply to other schools for Regular Decision consideration. Students have until May 1 to let Yale know whether or not they have decided to enroll.

If I am a finalist, what application materials do I have to submit to Yale by the November 2 deadline in order for my application to be considered complete?
  • Completed Common Application
  • Completed Yale Common Application Supplement (essays and other information may be copied and pasted)
  • Official high school transcript
  • Official scores for the SAT I and two SAT II subject tests OR the ACT with writing (official score reports from your guidance counselor will also be accepted)
  • Common Application School Report Form (with guidance counselor recommendation)
  • Financial Aid Documents
    • Complete the 2008-09 CSS Profile Application (available after October 1, 2007). Print a copy of the completed application and fax it to 203-432-9392.
    • Signed copy of parents' 2006 tax return including all schedules and W-2 forms.
    • Signed copy of Non-Custodial parents' 2006 tax return including all schedules and W-2 forms (if applicable).
    • Complete the Non-Custodial Profile (if applicable). Print a copy of the completed application and fax it to 203-432-9392.

What if my parents are not required to file a 2006 federal tax return?
If your parents are not required to file a 2006 federal tax return, please have them complete the 2007-2008 Parent Non-Tax Filer Statement.

Are there any materials that I do NOT have to resubmit by November 2?
It is not necessary to have your teachers resend their recommendation forms.

I am not a US citizen. May I still apply to Yale through the College Match program?
Yes. We will consider all applicants in the same light regardless of citizenship.

How can I have my application fee waived?
If you are a College Match finalist, you will automatically qualify for a fee waiver. On the Common Application, simply check the box for the “Fee Waiver” option. You do not need to submit any other paperwork.

If you are not a College Match finalist, you may still qualify for the fee waiver, but must apply using the instructions at http://www.yale.edu/admit/freshmen/application/fee_waiver.html.

Is an interview required for my application? How can I get one?
Interviews are recommended but not required. As soon as you submit your completed Yale application, we will try to find an alumnus in your area to interview you. You do not need to contact us to set up this alumni interview. Because we are not always able to find interviewers, you will not be disadvantaged in the application process if we are unable to provide you with an interview.

If you are planning to visit the campus before the end of November, you can schedule an on-campus interview by using the online scheduler.

How do I find out if I have matched with Yale?
QuestBridge will notify students of their College Match status on November 30. Students who match with Yale will hear from a Yale representative in the weeks following the match notification. If you have any questions about your status as a College Match Finalist or Scholar, you should contact QuestBridge directly.

If I apply through the College Match program and do not match with Yale, what are my application options?
If you do not match with Yale but match with another school, you are welcome to apply to Yale Regular Decision as long as this does not violate the rules of your match school. Most QuestBridge College Match acceptances are binding, so check with your match school before submitting a Regular Decision application to Yale. If you have a binding admission elsewhere, we cannot consider your application.

If you do not match any schools during the College Match program, you are also welcome to apply Regular Decision, and we will keep your completed finalist application in our pool for consideration. You do not need to resend your application documents, but feel free to send us an update in December or January on your achievements since submitting your original application.

If I apply through the College Match program and am not named a finalist, what are my application options?
If you are not named a College Match finalist, you are welcome to apply to Yale Early Action or Regular Decision using the Common Application and Yale Supplement. We are not able to accept the QuestBridge application for those who are not named College Match finalists, so teacher recommendations and the School Report will have to be resubmitted along with the rest of the application materials.

Are my chances of getting in to Yale different depending on how I apply?
QuestBridge College Match applicants are evaluated by the same high standards as all Yale applicants, taking into account the entire context of a student's high school program, family circumstances and personal achievements. Only the timing of the decision and the notification varies somewhat because of the Questbridge application timeline.

What happens with financial aid if I do not match with Yale in the College Match process but Yale does admit me later in the Regular Decision process? What financial aid will be available to me?
Yale offers excellent financial aid to all its students through our policy of need-based financial aid. Yale meets 100% of every family's demonstrated need. If you are admitted through the Early Action or Regular Decision admissions process, you will receive the same financial aid package you would have received had you matched with Yale during the College Match program. For more information about Yale's financial aid policies, check out our financial aid website.

How many students will be matched with Yale?
This is Yale's first year partnering with the College Match program, and we are very excited to be involved. Because we are new to the program, we do not yet know how many students we will accept in the College Match process. Matches will depend entirely on the strength of individual applications. We are also hopeful that some Questbridge applicants who do not match with Yale in the College Match process may be successful in our Regular Decision process in the spring.

Does Yale fund students' travel for visitation programs in the fall?
Yale does not have any overnight visitation programs for prospective students, but we invite students to visit the campus for information sessions and tours whenever they can. In particular, we invite students to attend our Multicultural Outreach Program's Open House on September 29, 2007. Students who are unable to travel to campus, should look for Yale information sessions in their area. We hope to see you at one of our events!
