Outside scholarships
These awards can be used to reduce the work-study requirement. Scholarships that exceed the earnings requirements can be deferred to subsequent academic years or used toward the one-time purchase of a personal computer. Additional scholarships will be used to reduce the Amherst grant dollar for dollar.

Health Insurance
Amherst requires all students to have health insurance, either through a parent or another plan. If student is not covered by a parental plan, the Amherst grant will be increased to pay for the $950 Amherst student health plan. Amherst will also cover up to $4,000 per year of unreimbursed medical/dental expenses, if needed.

Other details
Students may choose to replace the $750 summer work contribution with a loan. This amount is intended to cover transportation (or other personal expenses, for locations where the transportation allowance is less than $750). When the travel allowance (as determined by Amherst) exceeds $750, the grant will be increased to cover travel expenses.

The summer work contribution may be replaced with an Amherst College scholarship once in four years in order for the student to undertake an unpaid summer internship or unpaid summer community service project.

Music scholarships are available for the cost of for-credit music lessons.
