Mariella Ntamatungiro
Deerfield, Massachusetts

Pomona College, Class of 2010

Immigrating to the United States from Burundi at the age of 2 with her parents and older brother, Mariella grew up knowing the value of seizing opportunities. She escaped potential death by machete in Burundi and took the opportunity of a new life in America seriously. A focused and diligent student, Mariella works hard in the classroom, hoping that her work ethic could lead to even greater opportunities. It did. In the 8th grade, through A Better Chance, she applied to boarding school and set off to spend her high school years at Deerfield Academy. At Deerfield, she played soccer and volunteered in community service programs such as NELCWIT, WIC, Girls Club, and Deerfield Elementary School. Mariella is a faith-grounded young lady who aspires to become a master of languages, art, and medicine. She attributes her accomplishments to her mother and father, who have always taught her to strive for the best and to persevere along the way.
