Kim Bui
Solon, Ohio

Williams College, Class of 2011 (Tyng Scholarship Winner)

Kim Bui has been graced with many opportunities in her life. But opportunity is only half the story. From becoming a key member of the nationally recognized Solon Science Olympiad team to gaining Semifinalist status for the PSAT, Kim has worked hard to accomplish her educational goals. Through Speech and Debate, Kim learned to overcome her fear of public speaking, and through volunteering, she has been able to give back to her community. Kim is grateful everyday for the chances given to her from her mother’s perseverance, the prescience of her father, and the selflessness of her eldest sister. She owes her success to her family - to her mother who taught her about love and sacrifice, to her sisters who have made her childhood, though lacking in toys, colorful in memories of building forts from bed sheets and dressing up paper-dolls with paper dresses. From those moments, Kim learned the value of having an imagination, of having dreams and looking beyond what is lacking and seeing what could be. As she enters a new chapter of her life, the things she will achieve, whatever they may be, will be made of dreams and hard work.
