Policy on Outside Funding
All outside scholarships must be reported to the Office of Student Financial Services by submitting a copy of the award certificate or letter from the scholarship donor indicating the type and amount of the award. All outside scholarships reduce or replace the self-help portion of the package (federal loans and student contribution), and the Office of Student Financial Services will adjust the package as soon as documentation of the outside scholarship is received. Outside scholarships do not change or impact the expected parent contribution.
Policy on Health Insurance
Barnard College requires all students to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the academic year to protect against unexpected high medical costs and to provide access to quality healthcare while students are at school or traveling abroad. Therefore, all students enrolled at Barnard College are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or be covered by a health insurance plan with comparable coverage (usually through a parent). If students receive institutional aid and do not qualify for a health insurance waiver, they can apply for additional institutional grants to cover the health insurance fees.
Policy on Travel Allowance
Travel expenses for Barnard students are determined by their primary residence and are factored into a student’s financial aid award.
Requirements Associated with Maintaining this Award
While there are no academic requirements for the National College Match process, students must meet the College’s Satisfactory Academic Progress standards to determine eligibility for federal and institutional financial aid. The evaluation consists of three main components once enrolled: a minimum 2.0 GPA, completing at least 24 credits per academic year, and maintaining degree completion within the maximum timeframe.
Policy on Student Contribution
Students may be expected to contribute toward their college expenses even if they have a $0 parent contribution. This contribution can be met with income from summer earnings, portion of any assets, or familial assistance.
