Policy on Outside Funding
Students can use outside funding to reduce or replace the Federal Work-Study included in their financial aid award, and/or reduce their family’s net costs. Grant aid from Bates is reduced only if the combination of grant and gift aid from all sources exceeds the student’s annual cost of attendance.
Policy on Health Insurance
Bates requires all students to have health insurance, and students can waive the College Health Plan if covered by a family member or another plan. Students not covered by another policy who enroll in health insurance through Bates will receive a full grant subsidy to offset the cost.
Policy on Travel Allowance
Transportation is an estimated expense that does not appear on bills, but should be planned for. Students who require assistance facilitating their travel to campus are encouraged to reach out to Student Financial Services.
Policy on Student Contribution
Students are not required to work or contribute toward expenses from summer employment, but they are eligible to participate in Bates’ student employment program during the academic year to help pay for personal expenses. Students who work seven hours throughout the academic year can expect to earn $2,500.
Requirements Associated with Maintaining this Award
All financial aid is need-based; there are no athletic or merit-based awards. In general, students are eligible to receive financial aid at Bates for a total of eight semesters, though a student who is approved for a ninth semester of enrollment at the College may also receive financial aid. Students must also remain in good academic standing in accordance with federal regulations and academic policies set by the College.
