Students can often use outside funding to reduce school year earnings expectations. The College will do everything possible to let the student benefit from awards received from outside sources before reducing their grant from the College. However, the student's total aid cannot exceed their annual Cost of Attendance (COA).
Bates requires all students to have health insurance. Students can waive the College Health Plan if covered by a family member or another plan. For students not covered by an outside plan, Bates will cover the cost of health insurance if they receive grant aid from the College.
Transportation is an estimated expense that does not appear on bills, but should be planned for. The actual amount may be more or less, depending upon individual preference. If you require assistance facilitating your travel to campus, please reach out to Student Financial Services.
The student contribution is expected to go toward personal expenses (the non-billed portion of your student expense budget). This contribution can be met in a variety of ways (i.e. savings, summer job).
All financial aid is need-based; there are no athletic or merit-based awards. In general, you are eligible to receive financial aid at Amherst for a total of eight semesters. A student who is approved for a ninth semester of enrollment at the College may also receive financial aid. Students must also remain in good academic standing in accordance with federal regulations and academic policies set by the College.
