Introduction to the Icahn School

Located in New York City, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is an international leader in biomedical and scientific education, research, and patient care. Through a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and inclusion, the Icahn School educates and nurtures the next generation of exceptional clinicians, researchers, teachers, and leaders; conducts groundbreaking research; and delivers advanced, compassionate care with a commitment to health equity.

Among the nation’s top medical and graduate schools, the Icahn School of Medicine is unique. It is seamlessly integrated with the Mount Sinai Health System's seven hospitals, including The Mount Sinai Hospital, which has a large and diverse patient population that gives students access to world-class education, research, and patient care opportunities. Exemplified by their response to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, they are collaborative, entrepreneurial, and resilient in their quest to advance science, medicine, and health care delivery for the benefit of humanity and to generate new therapeutics for improvements in care. They distinguish themselves with a culture where everyone feels welcomed and benefits from the tools and opportunities for professional and personal success. The Icahn School’s talented students pursue MD, PhD, MD/PhD, Master’s, and several dual degrees, while clinical and research fellows undertake advanced training.

The Icahn School provides many opportunities to gain crucial skills and explore specialties and areas of interest. Through initiatives such as the East Harlem Health Outreach, students play an important part in expanding access to medical care locally. On a global scale, the Icahn School offers opportunities for students to contribute to research and expand health access in underserved communities around the world. There are many robust opportunities for student research, including the Scholarly Year, when nearly a third of each class spends one year focused on a project to build their research portfolio. After graduation, Icahn School students have gained the experience and education that enables them to match at many of the top residency programs in the country.

The campus community provides an abundance of ways to engage as an Icahn School student. More than 100 student groups foster communities organized around professional interests, community outreach, recreational activities, and affinity groups. The Mount Sinai First Generation club aims to provide a welcoming community and faculty mentorship for first-generation students at the school. Icahn School of Medicine has an especially encouraging culture of collaboration between students and leadership — all students have the opportunity to bring ideas directly to institutional leaders and work with the school towards achieving its mission.
