Located in the historic Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side, just 15 minutes from the city center, The University of Chicago Law School is known for its emphasis on analytical thinking, open debate, and interdisciplinary scholarship. As one of the smaller top law schools, UChicago Law enrolls approximately 200 students per entering class, fostering a close-knit community that cultivates meaningful relationships with faculty and peers. The student body is composed of individuals from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds.

At UChicago Law, students are engaged in dialogue through the faculty’s use of the Socratic Method, creating an open environment of active participation, deep debate, and intellectual curiosity. The quarter system allows students to take more courses than is typical at many law schools, while also exposing them early to foundational courses such as the distinctive first year required course, “Elements of the Law.” UChicago Law students frequently take courses in economics, business, public policy, computer science, and other fields across the university as well.

Experiential learning is a significant component of the UChicago Law experience. Through numerous clinics, students can gain hands-on experience representing real clients under faculty supervision in areas such as civil rights, entrepreneurship, environmental law, immigration, criminal justice, Supreme Court litigation, and corporate transactions. International immersions are also available as short-term study trips in countries throughout the world ranging from Brazil to China. These opportunities enable students to develop practical lawyering skills while addressing important legal and societal issues.

UChicago Law students balance their studies with many opportunities to engage in the community and connect with one another. 80% of first-year law students live in Hyde Park, which offers a variety of affordable housing options within a short distance to downtown Chicago. At UChicago, the city of Chicago is not just the backdrop, it's part of the experience. Many students participate in pro bono initiatives, journals, research projects, and student organizations. With more than 60 student organizations, students can pursue interests ranging from public interest law and entrepreneurship to constitutional law, identity and affinity initiatives, and professional development. The First Generation Professionals group supports those who are first in their family to pursue a college or professional degree and/or come from a low-income background. Through mentoring, social events, and career support, the group assists in the transition to law school and beyond. The UChicago Law experience fosters close relationships among classmates, and many students develop friendships and professional networks that last a lifetime.
