Introduction to Skidmore College

Skidmore College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational school in Saratoga Springs, New York. Here, Creative Thought Matters. A liberal arts education at Skidmore embraces creative thought and thinking across boundaries because Skidmore believes these are some of the most powerful ways to change the world and develop a happier, healthier, and more inclusive society.

Skidmore has a “do both” mentality that fuels curiosity and creativity. Interdisciplinary study allows students to open their minds and connect different ideas. At Skidmore, no one discipline dominates. Rather, students are encouraged to combine different modes of thinking and ideas from multiple fields. The First-Year Experience (FYE) at Skidmore provides information and support to new students as they prepare for their arrival and navigate their first year of college. Central to FYE are Scribner Seminars — taught by faculty from virtually every discipline to highlight their own intellectual curiosities and passions and help students explore ideas, challenge assumptions, and gain first-hand experience of faculty expectations of academic rigor and excellence.

Skidmore’s intentionally broad, flexible, and supportive educational experience makes it easy for students to dive into a singular passion or mix and match what matters to them by adding a minor, pursuing a double major, or creating an altogether different path. Skidmore offers dual-degree programs in engineering, nursing, and physical and occupational therapy, as well as affiliated master’s programs in medicine, teaching, and business.

Students enhance class and lab work in their majors through the breadth of study requirements, research, civic engagement and sustainability courses, internships, entrepreneurial competitions, capstones, performances, and more. Annually, 20% of the student body engages in collaborative research projects with a faculty mentor, many of them funded by the College. During their Skidmore career, 85% of students complete an internship, and 75% complete more than one. Pre-professional advising is available for a variety of fields, including engineering, health sciences, and law.

Skidmore strives to prepare liberally educated graduates to continue their quest for knowledge and to make the choices required of informed, responsible, and globally and interculturally aware citizens. They seek to build a community centered on mutual respect and openness to ideas — one in which individuals value cultural and intellectual diversity and share responsibility for creating a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment. Skidmore is a place where individual expression and collaboration work in harmony. With 19 varsity athletic teams and more than 100 student-run clubs — including dozens of sustainability, health, and wellness programs — students are invited to explore the unexpected.

Opportunities for off-campus study, exchange, and civic engagement abound, and Skidmore's Career Development Center is committed to supporting all students and alumni through the creative process of integrating their liberal arts education and experiences into a satisfying career. Every Skidmore class is taught by a faculty member, and 80% of faculty hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their fields. Students have direct access to an array of peer mentors, career coaches, engaged alumni, and health and wellness counselors. Students have a team of people supporting them in every endeavor, every step of the way.

50 %

of students study abroad, choosing from 120 programs in 45 countries, including four Skidmore-run programs, faculty-led travel seminars, and an exchange program with Spelman College. (And your financial aid travels with you!)

Skidmore graduates are making a difference in the world in a variety of ways. See how Skidmore alumni are putting creative thought to work.
