Massachusetts Institute of Technology FAQ

How do I apply to MIT through the QuestBridge College Match?

Students interested in applying to MIT through the College Match should open a MyMIT account, complete the QuestBridge application, and fulfill all MIT-specific application requirements. You should not complete the MIT application; your application will be forwarded from QuestBridge directly to MIT.

What materials are required for my Match application to MIT?

MIT’s application requirements are outlined here

How will I know if MIT received all my materials?

It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify MIT has received all required materials by checking their MyMIT account. If you have not done so already, you must sign up for a MyMIT account. Required materials must be submitted as soon as possible after the Finalists are announced, but no later than November 1st. Don’t worry if you see your application listed as “Early Action” – this means we’ve received your QuestBridge College Match application and entered it as our Part 1 and 2.

Is the application fee waived?

The application fee is automatically waived for all QuestBridge Finalists. Non-Finalists may request a fee waiver through their guidance counselor or they may submit a letter addressed to the Office of Admissions.

Can international students apply to MIT for the Match?

Yes, international students may apply to MIT through QuestBridge. MIT practices need-blind admissions for all students, regardless of country of citizenship. If you are admitted to MIT through the QuestBridge Match, you will receive the College Match Scholarship.  If you are admitted through Early Action or Regular Decision, MIT will assemble a financial aid package that will meet 100% of your demonstrated need.

By when do I need to complete the required standardized tests for MIT’s College Match process?

All required testing must be complete on or before the October test date to be eligible for the Match. Official scores must be sent to MIT directly from the testing agency. Please don’t “rush” any test scores. More information on test requirements is available here.

What are MIT’s requirements for teacher recommendations for the Match?

Two teacher recommendations are required for the College Match. MIT requires at least one of the two required teacher recommendations come from a math or science teacher. If neither of the recommendations in your QuestBridge Application is from a math/science teacher, please download an Evaluation A Form in the “Application Forms” section of your MyMIT account and submit per instructions.

MIT requires an official transcript sent directly to MIT from my school in addition to the transcript in my QuestBridge application. How does my school send the official transcript?

Your school should send a copy of your official transcript using Naviance/Parchment (if your school uses this system) or ApplyWithUs as soon as possible, but no later than the November 1st College Match application materials deadline. Alternatively, you may mail the transcript to:

Should I have an interview?

Yes. MIT applicants with interviews are actually admitted overall at a higher rate. Interviews can add very helpful information to your application and provides you an opportunity to expand on important information in your application. MIT’s interviewers, called Educational Counselors (ECs), are alumni volunteers that conduct the interview in your area. You must contact your EC by October 20th to arrange your interview for it to be considered with your College Match application. Your EC’s contact information will be available on your MyMIT account starting in late summer. Applicants applying through Regular Decision have until December 10th to contact their EC.

Do I have better chance of getting admitted to MIT by applying through QuestBridge?

We adhere to the same rigorous selection criteria in the QuestBridge College Match as we do in our non-QuestBridge process. Additionally, applying through QuestBridge will not impact the amount of financial aid you receive from MIT.

Is MIT’s Match binding?

MIT’s Match is not binding. MIT selects students that we feel will thrive in our community and, of course, we hope that they elect to enroll. Students Matched with MIT, however, may apply to other schools Regular Decision.

If I am not admitted through the QuestBridge College Match, how much financial aid will I be offered?

MIT offers need-blind admissions for all students, regardless of citizenship. If you are admitted to MIT through the QuestBridge Match, you will receive the College Match package. If you are admitted through Early Action or Regular Decision, MIT will assemble a financial aid award made up of grants, scholarships, and possibly loan and work eligibility that will meet 100% of your demonstrated need.  More information on financial aid is available here.
